Hi all,

It’s been a long time since we posted here. Sorry about that folks. Frankly, we all just got super busy with our next set of projects. But as Easter approaches we will be posting some updates.

First up: Anita Doron, director of Faye’s journey in Late Fragment, was chosen to be a TED Fellow this year 2010.

She gave a rousing speech about making sure that we treat life as blank canvas as much as we can…well here it si in her own words:

“I see things that are impossible to believe and experience people and situations that permanently misplace my previous knowledge constructs. And losing my conceptual frameworks and assumptions is not unlike losing the backpacks upon immigrating to Israel. I possess nothing more than a temporary understanding. And I’m unexpectedly grateful.

If I tried to control reality by making sense of it, by needing certainties and truths, I would miss all that is invisible and obscure and overlook the fluid places where magic lies. I gather my knowledge in fragments, and when they begin to form into a solid, singular piece, I break them apart by the introduction of another fragment. When the fragments crash, it sounds like heavy metal played by forest creatures in leather dunce caps and frayed silk wings. It’s haunting.

I call on us to experience the joy of relinquishing the judgments we’ve made. Let’s fight when we want to surrender and surrender when we want to fight. Let’s live as a deranged creature, hungry for the unknown, repeatedly ripping up plans and blueprints to see what emerges from nothingness, from bare faith. ”

–Anita Doron, Filmmaker–

Her TED Fellow talk, will be up shortly. We are working on another interactive film project with Anita and will be sending you updates about *that* soon.

Hey there! Big fan here, eagerly awaiting his copy of “Late Fragment” in the near future (hopefully!). I’ve always wondered, and, I hope this isn’t a to broad of a question to ask, but, I thought it would be interesting to know a bit about how exactly “Late Fragment” was shot and how its treatment in terms in plot and script and other similar elements were developed, considering that this is such a unique movie just standing alone and is on top of that an interactive movie which gives it a whole new element to it.

Hope to hear a reply soon! -Preston

Hi Preston,

Thanks for the question. Later this year we will be publishing a site called interactivefilm.org which will contain all our process documents, our scripts, our tools, etc. and made available to everyone. So stay tuned for that and hopefully that site will give you all the answers you are looking for.

Among a list of gems this year, such as Milk, The Wrestler, Shot In Bombay and The Dark Knight, Late Fragment has found itself on a list of Diamonds in the Rough: Best of 2008 on CinemaWriter.com

From Canada arrived a unique experiment in interactive cinema and New Media filmmaking. The directorial trio of Daryl Cloran, Anita Doron and Mathieu Guez managed to craft an engaging exercise in eliciting audience involvement (we used a remote control to guide the course of their web-like narrative at key points) without losing the essentially mesmerizing nature of the unfolding narrative — intertwining dark stories of murder, abuse and guilt, all beautifully acted and executed.

Community Justice Initiatives extended an invitation to the Late Fragment team to screen at the historical King Street Theatre in downtown Kitchener as part of National Restorative Justice Week 2008. To end a symposium for professionals in the Restorative Justice field, an art display, and an awards banquet, we screened Late Fragment to an inspired and inspiring audience.

After a successful year of festival screenings around the world, it seemed most appropriate to end our year with such an audience. After all, it was the same community workers and Restorative Justice advocates that inspired the story of the film in the first place. Anita Doron, Tina Santiago and Jeff Parazzo, introduced the film and welcomed audience members to join in a performative audience cut. Audience members were eager to participate and braved the hot seat.

The credits were welcomed with an enthusiastic applause. The biggest complement we could have ever received came from one audience member: “The film stayed true to the every day work that we do here. Thank you for making this film.”

Special thanks goes out to Judah Oudshoorn, Revive Service Coordinator, Mark
Yantzi, Executive Director, Community Justice Initiatives, Jennifer Davies,
Revive Program Coordinator and Sandra Reimer, Writer/Communication Strategist for their enthusiasm and support.
